Taxicab service in Athens, Ohio has always been a "family
run business"!!! Prior to TABS, there was Frosty, an individual with
one car and one cab stand at the corner of the Athens County Courthouse
at Court and Washington Streets. He took his calls from a black phone hanging
from the pole marking the cab stand. After completing one call, he came
back and waited for another. Can you imagine leaving a personal phone on
a public street corner today!!! I think we still could on that same corner,
but we would have to block long distance. (smile)
Today, there are two public pay phones on that corner, and two taxicab stands.
TABS came to Athens, Ohio in the early 1970's from Marietta, Ohio and remained
until the death of its previous owner, Gilbert Tabler. In 1999, Tab's Taxi
became TABS Transportation, LLC. Today, we have our own FCC license and
tower, more than enough safe and clean taxicabs, polite, courteous drivers
and dispatchers to serve the Athens public. Today, we operate the taxicab
service in the same manner as Frosty and Tab did: "a family-run business"
with "our customers being the biggest part of our family".
TABS is a mainstay thanks to the local people who support the taxicab service.
